Aljazeera: Taiwan not invited to WHO meeting despite COVID-19 success

Despite its lobbying efforts and success in combating the COVID-19 disease, Taiwan was not invited to participate in the 73rd meeting of the World Health Assembly, the main decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO), last week. Taiwan’s absence from the WHO, which the Taiwanese foreign minister has blamed on “obstruction” from China, demonstrates the PRC’s influence in the global health community. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry expressed “strong regret and dissatisfaction” at the “WHO’s continuing to neglect the health and human rights of Taiwan’s 23.5 million people,” and added that the WHO’s refusal to invite Taiwan based on political considerations made a mockery of the UN group’s “health for all” claim.
