As U.S.-China relations deteriorate and the U.S. wages a campaign against Huawei’s supply of telecommunications infrastructure for global 5G networks, the Philippines’ Globe Telecom is reportedly planning to replace its existing Huawei technology with non-Chinese equipment. Currently, Huawei equipment comprises around 80 percent of the Philippines’ existing cellular data networks. A representative from the company noted that although Globe prefers Huawei as a leader in (cheap) 5G technology, its decision to begin sourcing an “alternative network” of suppliers is also influenced by national security concerns.
