Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov began a two-day visit to China Monday. Citing the risk of further U.S. sanctions and the strained relations that Russia and China have with the U.S., Lavrov argued that both countries should reduce their dependency on the U.S. dollar and Western payment systems. “We need to reduce sanctions risks by bolstering our technological independence, by switching to payments in our national currencies and global currencies that serve as an alternative to the dollar,” Lavrov reportedly said according to transcripts released Monday.
