Taiwan conducted military drills at the Hukou army base south of Taipei on Tuesday. According to Major General Chen Chong-ji, director of the department of political warfare, the drills were meant to demonstrate Taiwanese resolve in defending the island from an invasion by mainland China. “No matter what is happening around the Taiwan Strait, our determination to guard our homeland will never change,” stated Major General Chen. The drills were also meant to reassure Taiwanese citizens that the military would be on-guard during the upcoming lunar new year. The current Taiwanese administration, helmed by Tsai Ing-wen, has endeavored to increase Taiwanese military preparedness by increasing arms purchases from the U.S. and bolstering domestic defense production. Throughout much of 2020, China has antagonized Taiwan with armed encroachments of Taiwan’s air and sea space.
