Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Thursday that the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Kelly Craft, would visit Taiwan. Kraft would be the third high ranking U.S. official to visit Taiwan since August. The move has rankled Beijing which remarked yesterday that ongoing multilateral talks that are being held between U.S. and Taiwanese officials were a severe departure from the one-China policy. Kraft’s visit to Taiwan comes amidst continued international outrage over China’s arrest of 53 individuals in Hong Kong earlier this week. Kraft is an outspoken supporter of Taiwan and a frequent critic of Beijing’s purported human rights abuses. At a Heritage Foundation seminar in New York in December she said that Beijing’s human rights abuses stood “in stark contrast to Taiwan, a true force for good in the world.”
