USNI News: Chinese Military Surveillance Ship, Aircraft Spotted at Contested South China Sea Reef
Fri June, 2021, Age: 1 week
Satellite imagery captured by Maxar indicates the presence of Chinese intelligence-gathering vessels, maritime patrol aircraft and multiple fishing vessels near the Spratly Islands, a disputed region of the South China Sea. The Spratly Islands, which lie closest to Vietnam, are claimed by Vietnam, the Philippines and China. China has constructed artificial islands on the Spratlys, including those equipped with a harbor, runway and military base. China’s increasingly assertive claims over the South China Sea have become a point of friction with its Southeast Asian neighbors.
