This action threatens to cut off equipment necessary for the manufacture of cutting edge chips, and mirrors similar export restrictions imposed on Huawei earlier this year. SMIC is backed by several state-owned entities and is at the heart of Beijing’s push to become self-reliant on advanced technologies.
